About

I'm a historical linguist with a special interest in medieval and Early Modern Scots. I have just completed writing a book on the language of Scottish burghs (1380-1560), which is now being prepared for publication by Oxford University Press. For this project, I used legal and administrative texts from the Edinburgh Corpus of Older Scots, the Helsinki Corpus of Older Scots and the Wigtown Burgh Court Book. My methodology for this study included searching for lexical bundles, which point towards standardisation of lexical patterns in a specialised text. A functional analysis of the most frequent bundles revealed the sources and motivations for textual standardisation in formal discourse.
I'm also interested in Scottish diasporas in Europe (especially the Baltic coast and Central Europe) in the Early modern period, and in the function of Scots as a linguistic identity marker.
