About

At present I'm working with my colleagues: Ania, Anka, Iwona and Karolina on BEREEM project. A short description follows:

PROJECT TITLE: BELIEF – REASON – EMOTION. ABSTRACT CATEGORIES IN POLISH AND ENGLISH AND THEIR ROLE IN THE CREATION OF INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY VALUES.
(BEREEM PROJECT)

The inspiration for the project comes from three areas of research:
1) Ethnolinguistics: the Linguistic Image of the World, in particular in relation to creating stereotypes enhancing in-group solidarity as well as emphasizing the axiological value encoded in seemingly neutral terms;
2) Philosophy and Language Acquisition stressing that empathy is the basis for the understanding of other minds
3) Social Psychology, in particular positive psychology focussing on increasing the quality of life in modern societies through the investigation of how such dimensions of social life as hierarchy, closeness and divinity interact and contribute to the feeling of happiness and meaningfulness in life.

Our general research question is How do folk models of abstract concepts: BELIEF – REASON – EMOTION differ in Polish and English and how can this affect inter-cultural communication?

The general theoretical background for the research is cognitive linguistics with insights from other cognitive sciences: philosophy, psychology, and sociology.
